THE
HISTORY OF BROOKWOOD COCKER SPANIELS
My husband and I have been breeding and showing for about 25 years. We are members of the American Spaniel Club, the Carolina Cocker Spaniel Club and the Moore County Kennel Club. We take an active interest in the breed in more ways than just breeding and showing. We attend the National Shows to find out about the most recent research and studies relating to the health of the breed. I have been on the Ethics Committee of the ASC and now also do some judging all over the United States at shows for puppies. We are fortunate to have as our Vet a lady that is the head of the Health & Education Committee for the American Spaniel Club and is also a Professor at the North Carolina School of Veterinary Medicine. All of this gives us a chance to make the best options for our breeding programs. As you can see from our group picture, all of our dogs are a part of our lives and have a home with us for life. We have done very well in the Show Ring with our dogs. If this is not of real interest to you, let me just say that it is of value to everyone interested in a Cocker as it show the quality of dogs that we consistently breed. Not every puppy is a show dog and we sell as many to pet homes as we do to fine show homes. The quality of breeding is the same, there may be some cosmetic reason that one is selected for a show home and another goes to a pet home. In 1990 we won the Cocker Spaniel Nationals with our dog "Calvin". The entry of 1071 dogs was the largest in history. We have had several All Breed Best In Show dogs and we have won the Breed at the Westminster KC Show several times (this is the one that is televised in February each year). We have breed about 40 Champions in the 25 year span of breeding, not bad when you consider we only breed about two litters a year. We have show dogs all over the world: England, Australia, Philippines, Argentina, Canada, and France. If you are considering
purchasing a puppy, please understand that we will need to know about
you and how the puppy would be living. I will not sell to anyone that
is planning on breeding the animal. They must be spayed or neutered
before I will give the registration papers for your dog. I will not
sell to anyone who is not planning to have this animal live in the house
with the family. The Cocker is a very social animal and having it live
outside with no human contact is no life for these dogs. I will need
references, such as the name and phone number of your Vet so that I
may check with him or her to assure myself that the pet would be well
taken care of. I will also be happy to supply you with names and e-mail
addresses of people that have purchased pets from me. The cost of a
puppy from us is very competitive with what other breeders are asking.
